Man in Ape Suit: One chocolate cream pie, please.
Baker: We’re out of chocolate.
Man in Ape Suit: Coconut?
Baker: All we have is banana.

8 months is not a very long time

Okay, I’m back.

Eight months ago I stopped writing about work because I realized that the tone and content of my writing were aimed at an audience of friends and colleagues, and not -as I had originally intended- at an audience of library users and neighborhood residents.

While most of my blogging was perfect for a neighborhood branch, enough of my posts were strong opinions or lengthy digressions, strong and lengthy enough to give me pause. Would I soon regret blogging under my employer’s and branch’s names? Augh! Getting in trouble for blogging about work was so 2004!

Not that I ever got in any trouble. I had lots of great feedback from people in administration, friends, neighbors, and strangers. The old blog is out there still somewhere, waiting to serve as an example of how a neighborhood branch blog could begin, and continue…

And that’s the great news. I have every reason to believe that I’ll have a branch blog soon – a real one, an official one, part of the library’s official website – when we roll out our new ILS and website in the coming months. Yay!

In order to share my strong opinions and lengthy digressions (as well as my obsessions, original works, and other curiosities) in a better way, I’ve set up mightybob.com and set it up right -on my own server, powered by WordPress- copying some posts from the old blog, XXXing out the name of my employer and branch, and merging in some stray bits from an older blog that nobody ever even knew about.

It only took me 8 months to get around to doing all this work, which is pretty good turnaround considering that (a) I don’t really like doing this kind of thing, (b) it isn’t free and I really don’t like paying for anything, (c) I have lots of better things to do with my time.

So if you think 8 months is a long time, check back in another 8 months to see if XXX Public Library has its new website up yet, ha ha ha… or if anybody is even still blogging 8 months in the future from now…
